THE MODEL SCHOOL CLASS SCHEDULES |
 |
Each classroom teacher posts a schedule so that parents can
have an overview of the days' activities. Each schedule includes
the following elements:
The Independent Work Period
The Independent Work Period is an important concept in
relationship to The Model School philosophy. It is a reasonably
long block of time, an hour or more for the three to six age
group, during which each child is free to choose what he or she
wishes to do. Thus the child has an opportunity to get ideas,
and to explore and experiment with them.
Teachers must use great skill during this period, as the success
of the independent work period is dependent not only upon the
quality and completeness of the learning environment but also
upon the quality of the interaction between teachers and
children and between children and children. As children make
their choices, the teachers act as facilitators of the learning
process and provide cognitive input. Teachers also maintain
observation records so that they know the developmental level
and interests of each child.
Group Periods
Group periods provide an opportunity for children to share
experiences with the teacher and with each other. Certain
activities lend themselves to the group experience: teacher
demonstrations, music, drama, dancing, story telling, reading,
some scientific experiments, academic reinforcement and group
discussions are among these.
Sharing Day
The Pre-Kindergarten classes designate one day during the week
as sharing day. On this day, children are permitted to bring a
favorite item to school to share with the group.
This time is very important to the children, and they take it
very seriously. Children often get very upset when they forget
their "share toy." A gentle reminder from the parent might be
helpful.
Parents are urged to use discretion in the things children
are allowed to bring. No toy guns, swords, weapons of any kind
or potentially dangerous objects are allowed at school. Parents
should also be cautious about allowing children to bring
valuable objects even on sharing days. We simply cannot
guarantee their safe return.
Outdoor Activities
Outdoor activities include free play, as well as organized games
and special perceptual motor activities designed to promote
large muscle development and gross motor skills. Outdoor
activities also include short walks around the neighborhood ,
trips to the park and field trips.
Rest Period
Young children who are at school all day will have a nap period.
Quiet times and/or rest periods will be provided for older
children as needed. Naps may be optional for children who are
four or older and occasionally for a three year old with the
parent's consent.
The Model School Year
The Model School offers full year child care and development
services. The school is closed only on specified legal holidays
